To visit Chinchón is to lose oneself in its streets and squares, contemplating its unique manor houses and buildings with popular architecture, stopping only to refuel in taverns and eateries.
The Main Square of Chinchón is a classic medieval square at its best, with architecture popular at the time and whose first houses surrounding it with supporting columns and balconies were built in the 15th century, being finally completed in the 17th century
It is considered, without any exaggeration, to be one of the most beautiful squares in the world because of its balance and proportions. It is not exactly square and its shape is simple, clear, orderly and rather hierarchical, with a collection of three-story buildings whose lintelled galleries and 234 wooden balconies, called "windows", are supported by studs and footings.
Numerous activities have been held in its square : from royal festivals, proclamations, traveling theater groups, games, bullfights, executions, eucharistic plays, religious, political and military acts, cinema sets and many others.
The wise member of the Royal Academy, Manuel Alvar has written that: "the town’s main square owes its balance to absolute perfect building practices".
